Campaign: Challenge Beach Management Permitting Practices:
Stop Harmful Beach Fill Projects
Surfrider Foundation Palm Beach County Chapter, Florida
- The Surfrider Foundation Palm Beach County Chapter, Snook Foundation & 3 Individuals successfully challenged a dredge-and-fill project permit under their “Reach 8” campaign, that posed threats to environmental, economic, & recreational coastal resources in Lake Worth and Palm Beach, Florida. This is one successful battle in the fight for proper beach management, and the Chapter and other supporters aren’t stopping here.
- To help address future beach fill projects, the Surfrider Foundation Palm Beach County Chapter and other supporters are focusing on 1) greater public outreach and education regarding the importance and fragility of the beach ecosystem and how it is threatened by these beach fill projects, 2) an improved permitting process for beach fill projects, one that is not dictated by the beach dredging lobby and incorporates an ecosystem-based management approach to permitting these projects, as opposed to the piecemeal permitting scheme now in place.
- The Chapter looks forward to working with the state agencies and working groups to better these practices, in this larger fight for proper beach management. The Chapter will also address how the permitting system is currently flawed, including a lack of valuation for recreation and fishing resources and inaccurate assessments of environmental harm.
- In order to accomplish these goals, the Chapter is raising funds and awareness to aid with their efforts in drafting new, improved standards and regulations for better beach management practices in Florida and across the country.
